Good bye to Google Map maker

Back in the days of 'No Smartphone' but Human connections, we used to rely on someone's guidance with their past travel or commuting experience to travel throughout a city. and some privileged travelling  people used to have GPS devices which were quite handy if you know how to operate. They are still being used in forest areas, oceans  where there will be no satellite or telephone networks  there were physical Map sheets, they were only limited to class rooms and offices . Slowly the map gadgets were introduced by some major companies which used to be bulky , expensive and had limited map of selected cities. Gradually they became the must have gadgets for car owners like Television for any household.

But, the booming of internet enabled the maps to get introduced on the desktop/laptop browsers which were later introduced into smartphones . Currently, maps are so integrated in our daily commuting that we even use indoor maps to surf around big box retail stores.

A major name which made maps a default on smartphones is Google. Google is a company which has become so famous that people use the word google as a pronoun for searching the information on the internet ( google it) . Google has several services which it gives for free to the public worldwide. Google maps is one of them but probably one of the most used services.

Google map offers the visual/audio routes to the destinations around the world from any point on the planet. Though it gets the map data from the governments and the satellites, it is very difficult to maintain the up to date map data of the world .Hence it had introduced a tool called or App ( Google Map maker)to facilitate the regular update of the any places on the planet which will be managed by the public and moderators around the world.

Google map maker lets you to edit the details of a place or you can add a new place which you do not find the on the google maps.  You can edit any aspect of a place like spelling of the name , the exact physical location, the working hours, landmarks nearby, the website details, the contact details and so on. Once you edit or add a new place, it would go to google map maker dashboard and it will be reviewed either by moderators or anyone who has the knowledge about that place. Once it gets approved, it will be officially added to the google maps. I have had added/edited few places out of which some requests were denied and some got approved and published.

Recently Google made an announcement that it will be closing/retiring the google map maker starting from March 2017 . This is not a surprise  move but  obvious. As mentioned by the google in the official announcement, they have integrated all the features of google map maker into Google maps itself so that it is easy for the public to access, edit and review the places. why do we need duplicate service... ??? right !!

Like many other  Google products, Google map maker is also going in archive but it has served its purpose very well and will  remained to be  and integrated in the google maps.

Miss you Maker !!

Bug Reports in Facebook

Every digital system will have one or the other defects no matter how much robust the system is. Hence we see news about security breaches often. Even NSA is also not an exception. So is the Facebook.

I was not using Facebook often earlier. I started using it more frequently since last year. As a new user, it was easy for me to point out some of the small glitches that FB has. I felt very happy when I found a first bug in FB which was about video call . But soon, I encountered few ( precisely 5) issues in FB and reported them using their Reporting tool. Every time I submitted the Bug, I was expecting Bug bounty from Facebook(Bragging myself)  . But for my disappointment, the reply from the Reporting tool bots is always the same that Your issue has been closed. I used to wonder how come I am not entitled to get a bug bounty at least for once out of 5 times but didn't have answer.

Fortunately I got a chance to talk with Facebook Technical team in one of  the Android BBQ conference which held in Hurst.. I was very anxious about their reply . At the end of their session on Android in Facebook, I met them down the stage and asked  thats I have submitted few bug reports in FB but still now I havnt got any bounty' They must have laughed inside but they were diplomatically answered saying ' Facebook get thousands of Bug reports daily which can reach even 50k a day as well. Most of them will be duplicate bug reports. and several of them would have been identified by Facebook employees itself. So it is very rare that someone get bug bounty . I was quite disappointed hearing to this but glad that my expectations were set straight. May be thats the reason i havnt found any bug after that :)

Wonobo - Indian Street view

Wonobo ….

Yes, you read it right and spelling is also right...  Presumably , most of you wouldn’t have come across this name. Because of obvious reasons- It’s neither in Silicon Valley nor it’s offering mega sales.

Till recently before startup boom, most of the online related business or services were limited to Yahoo, Google, amazon, apple and other big players who have got a plenty of cash to spend money on anything they need unlike the  local players. Though there are lot of other competitors to these biggies, the game is one sided. But thanks to the innovative and risk appetite minds taking on existing monopoly mammoths.  One such example is Wonobo.

This is the street view service provider for Indian Metro cities similar to Google street view in other countries.  For people who are not familiar with this feature - - This service provides recorded 360* view of majority of roads along with the entire infrastructure present over there.  This is a great service which would help you to get familiar with the place before you visit it or just explore it out of curiosity.

I came across this service about 2 years ago when it was reported that Google was not given permission to run their google map cars to create street view in India. I have always been wondering why this service is not popular among us though we are tech savvy . we should utilize the native products and appreciate their effort which will enable them to serve us better.  After all now it is ‘Make in India’!

Few days back I had emailed to Wonobo team to enquire about their silent Street view story. Fortunately they have some big plans to come out with. Hopefully more and more people start using this and appreciate the technology. All the best @wonobo
